Every shielded spend on Zcash publishes one value and hides everything else. That value is called a nullifier.

It is not the amount. It is not the sender, or the receiver, or the note. It is a single number, derived from the note being spent, that the network has never seen before and will never accept twice. Publishing it is how you say this is spent without saying what.

Nobody can work backwards from it. The note it came from sits in a tree with every other note ever created, and the nullifier points at none of them in any way an observer can follow. The chain learns that something moved. It learns nothing about what.

That is a strange kind of presence. A mark that proves an event and refuses to identify it. Public and unreadable at the same time.
